BSN Nursing Application Checklist

  • Admitted to Valdosta State University

    For active duty military applicants, please contact Mr. Leo Melody (lcmelody@valdosta.edu) in the Adult and Military Programs Office regarding applying to Valdosta State University.

    A student identification number will be needed as a component of the application process for the BSN program. A student identification number is provided upon applying to the University. 

  • Were you previously enrolled in a nursing program?

    If you were previously enrolled in a nursing program within the last five years, you must submit a petition to the School of Nursing Admissions and Progressions Committee for permission to apply to the BSN program. For the student petition, the student classification is pre-nursing. The petition type is other: Permission to Apply to the BSN program.  Below is the link to the student petition form.

     In addition to a student petition form, a letter of good standing is needed from the nursing school you were previously enrolled in. Please include official copies of your academic transcript as well.

  • Nursing Core Requirements

    All core classes must be completed prior to the start of the BSN program.

    Students must work with an academic advisor to complete a plan in Degree Works showing all pre-requisite courses in Areas A-F will be completed by the time they would begin their cohort if accepted.

    5 Year Rule

    Courses in Area F older than 5 years at the application deadline must be retaken. The following courses are in Area F.

    BIOL 2651 (Anatomy and Physiology I)

    BIOL 2652 (Anatomy and Physiology II)

    BIOL 2900 (Microbiology in Health and Disease)

    NURS 2700 (Pathophysiology)

    PSYC 2103 (Intro to Human Development)

    Courses in Area D.2.Bolder than 5 years at the application deadline must be retaken. The following courses are in Area D.2.B.

     MATH 2620: Statistical Methods 

    Repeat Policy

    Minimum of “C” in each math and science course in Areas D.2.B and F. If a D or F is earned in any Area D.2.B or F course(s) it must be replaced with a C or better prior to application. Note: Only the C or better grade will be used when calculating the Nursing GPA. All attempts will be used when calculating overall GPA. The courses in Areas D.2.B and F are:

    BIOL 2652 (Anatomy and Physiology II)

    BIOL 2900 (Microbiology in Health and Disease)

    Acceptable Transfer Courses

    BIOL 2651, BIOL 2652, PSYC 2103 and BIOL 2900 will not be accepted from Technical Colleges in Georgia. The only exception is Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. The above listed classes will be accepted from Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. For questions regarding this information, please contact the CONHS CONHS Advising Center at conhsadvising@valdosta.edu.

  • Transcript Evaluation Options

    Option 1: Apply to Valdosta State University Undergraduate Admissions Office ($40 application fee). Send official transcripts to the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Once you receive your acceptance letter, email the CONHS Advising Center (conhsadvising@valdosta.edu) requesting a transcript evaluation. Please include your name and student identification number in the email.

    Option 2: Send your official transcript and $45 to Mrs. Cecilia Furey (1500 North Patterson Street, Valdosta, GA 31698). However, most students chose option 1 if they are not a VSU student because if you decide to enroll at VSU, you will eventually have to apply to Valdosta State University and pay the $40 application fee.

  • Grade Point Average Requirements

    The admission requirements are a 2.8 overall grade point average and a 3.0 nursing certification grade point average. The overall grade point average includes attempts of all college classes completed. The nursing certification grade point average only includes classes in Areas A, D.2.B, and F, with only the highest attempt of each included.

    If you repeated courses in Areas A, D.2.B, and F, then please ensure you list only the highest attempt for the course to accurately calculate the nursing certification GPA.

  • HESI A2 Exam

    Valdosta State University HESI A2 Exam Requirements

    To eligible for admission into the nursing program, students must earn a 75 or higher in the following areas:

    • Reading Comprehension
    • Vocabulary and General Knowledge
    • Grammar
    • Anatomy & Physiology
    • Math

    If students take the HESI exam twice, the highest attempt will be used in the nursing admission decision.

    Registering for the HESI A2 Exam at Valdosta State University

    To register for the HESI A2 exam, please click on the following link to register for the exam online: https://www.registerblast.com/valdosta/Exam/List. If you have any trouble registering for the HESI A2 exam online, please contact the VSU Office of Testing (229-245-3878). The HESI A2 Exam costs $60. You can pay the $60 fee online when registering for the HESI A2 exam. The exam will be administered in the VSU Office of Testing located in Powell Hall East Room 1131.

    HESI A2 Exam Limits

    The HESI A2 may be taken no more than twice in the 12 months prior to the application cycle.

    Submitting HESI A2 Exam Scores. 

    NOTE: Due to COVID-19, the HESI A2 exam could not be administered. Therefore, it will not be required for the Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 cohort application cycles.

    Students who complete the HESI A2 exam at a location other than Valdosta State University, please request for Evolve to send your official HESI A2 scores to conhsadvising@valdosta.edu . There is a $15 fee to send your HESI scores to Valdosta State University.

    If you complete the HESI A2 exam at Valdosta State University, you do not need to send your scores to conhsadvising@valdosta.edu . Your scores will automatically be received if you complete the exam at Valdosta State University. 

  • State of Georgia Legislative Requirement

    All State of Georgia Legislative Requirements must be satisfied either by exam or course credit prior to enrolling in the nursing program.

  • Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program (MECP)

    For U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine military personnel interested in pursuing the Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program (MECP) for Fall 2019, the application deadline for the nursing program is July 31, 2018. All of the application requirements must be met and submitted by this date. Potential students will also need to submit a leave earning statement to verify military status. Please submit your leave earning statement to the CONHS Advising Center (conhsadvising@valdosta.edu).

    Submitting your application by July 31, 2018 does not guarantee you acceptance into the BSN program. You will receive a letter indicating if you are conditionally accepted by August 15, 2018. For information regarding the admissions requirements, please contact the CONHS Advising Center at conhsadvising@valdosta.edu.

    To apply to Valdosta State University as a military applicant, please contact Mr. Leo Melody (lcmelody@valdosta.edu) in the Adult and Military Programs Office.

    MECP applicants must submit an application for the nursing program through the Nursing and Health Sciences Application Portal by the above deadline.

  • Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP)

    For U.S. Air Force military personnel interested in pursuing the Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) for Fall 2019, the application deadline for the nursing program is January 15, 2019. All of the application requirements must be met and submitted by this date. Potential students will also need to submit a leave earning statement to verify military status.   • Nursing and Health Sciences Application Portal

    The College of Nursing and Health Sciences has an application portal for students to apply to the nursing program. To access the College of Nursing and Health Sciences application portal, students must use  their MyVSU username and password.  For applicants who are not current or former Valdosta State University students, a MyVSU username and password will be provided once accepted to Valdosta State University. Please do not procrastinate in applying to Valdosta State University.

    Please click on the link below to access the College of Nursing and Health Sciences application portal. The welcome page of the application portal will provide detailed instructions on submitting an application through the application portal.

    Students will find out their acceptance status for the BSN program 8 to 10 weeks after the application deadline.
